How to move on after cancer.

Can you ever truly move on after treatment?

Many of us struggle to let go of our cancer experience because for so long it defined who we were.

Our whole lives revolved around it.

Nothing else existed except the fact that we had cancer and we didn’t want to die.

And then we become the lucky ones - we survive treatment.

The doctor tells us it’s time to go back to our lives.

I wish the doctors wouldn’t tell us that.

I spent nearly three years desperately trying to go back to my life before cancer, and I failed dismally.

There is no BACK to go back to.

But as long as we keep trying to get back to our lives before cancer, we will continue to carry our cancer experience wherever we go.

If we’re focused on the past then how can we possibly put the cancer behind us?

And as long as I kept trying to get back to the old me I would keep failing, and keep blaming cancer for not being able to move on and find happiness.

But all I had to do was stop trying to go back, and then I finally started to go forward.

Forget the old you.

You went through cancer treatment.

You will never be that old you again.

And the quicker you can accept that the better.

You are a new improved version now.

Stronger, more courageous, deeper.

You know what it means to go through hell and survive.

So of course you’ll never be the same again.

Instead of trying to go back, get to know yourself now.

Get to know yourself all over again as the person you are today.

The person that transformed.

The person that survived cancer treatment.

That’s how you truly move on and leave the cancer behind you.
