I am a cancer misfit.

Cancer survivor implies I am still clawing my way out in some way.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The word survivor has such a heaviness to it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Like the chains of cancer are still somehow dragging along behind me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cancer misfit says cancer changed me, and it’s okay that I don’t fit in with who I used to be.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And who wants to fit in anyway?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fitting in is overrated.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
No square peg square hole for me thank you very much.
I am a cancer misfit because cancer made me wonky and wonderful.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And why does the word misfit have a negative connotation anyway?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
‘A person whose behaviour or attitude sets them apart from others in an uncomfortably conspicuous way.’
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yes what we went through changed us and sets us apart.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But no it doesn’t have to be in an ‘uncomfortably conspicuous way.’
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am very comfortable being a cancer misfit.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And I don’t feel conspicuous because there’s a whole tribe of you out there just like me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I might stick out.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But with you I fit in.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m not alone.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You’re not alone.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are the cancer misfits.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And united we stand in all our wonky and wonderful glory.
