“There is no need to go to India, or anywhere else, to find peace. You will find that deep place of silence right in your room, your garden, or even your bathtub” – Elisabeth Kubler-Ross.
We don’t notice how our lives are surrounded by constant noise.
In fact it’s become so natural and normal to us that if we find ourselves in a place of quiet our instinct is to immediately fill it with something… the TV, music, the washing machine, even the sound of our own voice.
It’s as if we go out of our way to avoid the silence because we are so afraid to be alone with ourselves.
But we couldn’t have got it more wrong if we tried.
Transformation, illumination, and positive change…
these beautiful things all happen when we allow ourselves to stay in silence for a moment and just be.
I’m not saying you need to pack your bags and go to a silent retreat if you want a life of love & light.
You don’t need to go to that extreme in order to transform your life.
You can find a moment of silence without needing to escape your life.
That’s the whole point, finding a moment to be still and quiet amongst the craziness of your life.
Ten minutes of meditation can have a profound effect on your life.
Just ten minutes of meditation a day can do the trick; it can make the miracle happen.
It’s just ten minutes so there’s so point trying to justify that you are too busy. There’s no excuse, just avoidance.
I was crap at meditation when I first started, I might have been quiet but I certainly wasn’t still…my thoughts were having an all out rave in my head!
I was thinking about anything and everything, shopping I needed to do, a brilliant line of inspiration I just had to write down, what dress to wear that night.
But that’s okay!
The point is I sucked at it, but within those ten minutes I must have got a least one little tiny minute where I was complete still and at peace.
And that one minute grew to one minute and 30 seconds, and then to two whole minutes of stilling my mind completely.
That’s the myth that everyone falsely believes…meditation is not about reaching perfect stillness, it’s about trying to still your mind…emphasis on the word trying!
Not even Buddha could meditate perfectly.
Okay maybe Buddha could but no one else can!
And someone once told me the beauty of drifting off in thought during meditation is that it’s the perfect excuse to reconnect to your soul, your higher power and the universe.
The more your head wanders the more times you get to bring it back to a place of peace.
There are some great apps out there, I use one every morning, and also great free meditations on YouTube, so go explore and see what you like.
Just give it a shot…what have you got to lose?
